DIALOGUE among dance makers about making dance... LOOKING at the works we have created in their various parts... REFLECTING on and sharing our experiences, successes, failures, insights, regrets, and discoveries along our individual choreographic journeys.

We are always looking for more contributors to help drive this conversation…

What is The Choreography Clinic about?

This exchange will specifically look at the anatomy of works we have created, and how we, as dance makers, have interacted with and viewed (and even now view) the various parts of our dance work (i.e. beginnings, middles, endings).  The goal of this project is not to pin individuals into a singular process, methodology, or philosophy, rather, it is to reflect on and share our experiences, successes, failures, insights, regrets, and discoveries along our individual choreographic journeys.  The Choreography Clinic will share the experiences of dance makers (from aspiring to established), students, and educators.  My hope for this project is to develop a referential tool that houses open and nurturing dialogue on areas of commonality in dance making and the creative ways we address the issues that arise.

What are we asking you for?

Each month, I will email 4-7 questions once a month on dance making.  As a contributor, we are asking you to provide thoughtful, honest answers to the questions within 2 weeks to be posted on the blog. Your reflections help to drive the conversation. You are free to contribute as much or as little as your availability allows.  If you are too busy to answer the questions during a month, you just pass on that month. And that is it!

If you desire to help us drive this conversation, please register here.

If you know of any other dance makers (aspiring to established), students or educators who would be interested in contributing to this dialogue, please pass this information along to them. The more, the merrier!

Thank you for your time and your contribution to our artform.

    • Hi Dale. Welcome! I am in the same boat you are. A major reason for me starting this blog was because I am in a seeking phase as an artist. Hopefully we can help each other :)

  6. Hello,
Sounds very interesting! I have a flamenco studio and work with live musicians when I set choreographies. Would be interested in participating if you need a different dance perspective. Thank you!

    • Hi Chiara. Your perspective would be wonderful to have on the blog. I am sure you have unique insight you could share with us. Welcome!

  10. Hello! This sounds like a wonderful project, and would be very interested to join! Hopefully I am not late!

    • Hi Kim. I apologize that I did not respond to you earlier. I was in the process of moving and putting together a concert. But, I have you on the list now and I look forward to dialoguing with you

  11. Marlita,
Kudos on what seem to be an exiting and ambitious endeavor!

I would like to participate in your dialogue and I have a particular interest in collaboration as it relates to the choreographic process. As a professional dance artist and educator, working with composers and musicians, and more recently with actors and text, has been an ongoing and an integral part of my work. It takes more than desire to successfully navigate working in a cross disciplinary way and I am grateful to have trained with master teachers Mary Anthony, Anna Sokolow and Bessie Schonberg as I was beginning my choreographic career. The guidance they gave me continues to shape the way I approach dance making and teaching choreography to this day.

    Yours in dance,
    Janaea

  12. Hi Marlita!

    Yours in dance,

    Donielle I. Turner

  13. I’d love to participate in this blog! Please let me know how I can begin.

    Thank you very much,

    Jeanette

  14. I would love to participate in this dialogue. What a great idea! I’m a dance artist, educator, and scholar (author of Introduction to Modern Dance Techniques). Re-examinig my dancemaking process is exactly what I need right now. As a dancemaker, my work is pretty eclectic, spanning classical/formal approaches as well as post-Judson/contemporary practices as well.

Thanks so much to bringing us all together!

    • Hi Joshua! How wonderful to have you. I just bought your book. I’m excited to read it. Welcome.

      • Thank you! I really appreciate it, and hope you’ll send me some feedback when you’ve read it. It’s great to be a part of this community!

  15. I’m returning to choreographing after a hiatus of teaching. I’m working on a full length dance and would love to join in on the conversation.

    • Awesome! Welcome. I would love to have your input. How far along on your piece are you?

  16. Just getting back in following a baby hiatus of 3 years. I have been working since 1996 and writing about dance since 1998. I would love to contribute.

  17. I would love to help contribute! I’ve been choreographing for almost 10 years now, 2 of which have recently been for musical theatre for ages 7-12 and 11-18. I have also choreographed ballet, contemporary, jazz, and tap for ages 3-college. I hope I can contribute – this is something I woul love to do!

  18. Hi. I am also interested in participating.

  19. I would like to contribute! My email address is shalimarali@yahoo.com

  20. Hello everyone. Thank you so much to all of you who have responded in the last week to being a contributor on this blog. I wish I had to time to thank you all individually but we have lots of time to get to know each other. I am sending out questions as I get your emails. Have a wonderful night, thank you so very, very much, and…Happy reflecting!

    Marlita

  21. Please add me to the list. For many years, I have choreographed, taught, and performed. The creative process has always been one of my main interests. As a “seasoned” dance professional, I believe there is alot I can contribute to the dialogue.

  22. I would love to be a part of this! This seems like an exciting venture and a great way to have many ideas/resources available for students, teachers, and choreographers.

  23. I am very interested!

  24. Count me in. This sounds interesting and informative. I always find new inspiration in what others say about creating choreography but never get to interact with other choreographers.

  25. Hi Marlita,

I’ve been dancing for just under 30 years and have been teaching & creating original works of choreography since 1995. I’d love to contribute and join in on the discussions!

  26. I would love to be a part of this!

  27. I’m interested in writing on the blog. Been director and major choreographer of Ballet North since 1986.

  28. Wake me up! I meant ‘Hi Marlita”. …(I’m not that old!)

    • LOL…I totally understand. And retired or not, you still have something to contribute. We would love to have you!

  29. Hi Rachel. I am retired and would probably show up in the dinosaur category. But I’d love to view your monthly questions and respond when I can.

  30. I am interested in participating. This is a wonderful idea.

    • Hi Nasrene. Thank you. I’m glad you want to be a part.

  31. marlita!! i’d love to join!

    • Absolutely!

  32. Hi there,

I would love to be a contributor. I’ve been choreographing for about 10 years and specialize in improvisational scoring and dance/physical theatre works. Looking forward to seeing the project develop!
    Best,
    Bethany

  33. I’ve been dancing all my life and am interested in any and all discussions pertaining to dance choreography.

  34. Hi Marlita!

I heard about this site via laculturenet and would like to contribute when possible. I am an emerging choreographer based in San Francisco and have been dancing my entire life. Your blog is a great resource and as a new choreographer, I am constantly reflecting on my practice and often ask more questions about the process than find answers. I have my own blog about dance making, being an artist and the challenges and successes of being in this world of dance making as well.

Please let me know when you need any contributions :-)

    Becky

  35. Hi Marlita,

I love to talk shop but rarely get the chance, I’d like to be on the email list. I’ve been choreographing for 35 years (eeck!). Thank you.

    • Hi Renee. Welcome! I will definitely add you to the list. It will be awesome to have your contribution to the conversation.

  36. I’m intrigued by this project as a way to connect choreographers who are often working on their own and with their own dancers, but rarely get to interact with their colleagues. We’re all way too busy . . . but yanevaknow . . . . Thanks

    • Hi Keith. Thank you so much for visiting us. I am really excited about this project- for the same reasons you are intrigued. I hope that it proves useful- if only to show someone that they are not the only ones who contend with various aspects of this craft.

  37. I am a choreographer working primarily in comedy dance and, at this time, with dancers over 40. Had an article published in Dance Studio Life about dancing as we age. Would love to contribute to this, particularly because I think comedy is still a “red-headed stepchild” in dance. Few of us do it, fewer of us make it a priority. But I have found it helps make dance accessible to audiences that might otherwise not get it.

    • Hi Catherine. That is awesome. You will bring such an interesting perspective to the conversation. I am going to send you an email. Thank you!

  38. I am interested in contributing and listening to the discussions that are happening on this site. Looking forward.

    • Hi Rachel. Wonderful. I will include you in the email as well. Thank you!
