Promises Made, Ground Laid

In her book, “Elements of Fiction Writing: Beginnings, Middles, and Endings,” Nancy Kress talks about the beginning of stories making implicit promises that lay the ground for how the rest of the story will play out. She further states that these promises “are made in the beginning, developed in the middle, and fulfilled at the end.” This month’s questions are a reflection on the role, or various roles, the beginning has served in relation to the rest of our pieces.
